Fes to Merzouga: Route and Travel Planning

Plan the Middle Atlas and Ziz Valley journey, then choose whether to return to Fes or continue toward Marrakech.

How the Fes route reaches the dunes

The Fes-to-Merzouga road trip moves from the Middle Atlas toward Midelt, the Ziz Valley and the Erg Chebbi dunes. Our current Fes tour itineraries name Ifrane and Midelt on the first day before Merzouga. The Moroccan National Tourist Office also describes Fes as a starting point for a journey through Tafilalet and Rissani toward the desert. Those regional references help orient the trip, but the day-by-day company itinerary determines which stops are planned.

Start by deciding whether Merzouga is a destination before returning to Fes or a stop on the way to Marrakech. That choice changes the route after the desert, the number of hotel nights and the time available for southern Morocco. Do not select a trip solely because its first day mentions the same towns.

Return to Fes or continue to Marrakech?

Return or continue onward

Existing tourDesert and onward patternWho it may suit
Three-day Fes round tripTwo Merzouga camp nights, then return via Rissani and Erfoud to Fes.Travelers who need to finish in Fes and want a separate desert day.
Four-day Fes to MarrakechTwo Merzouga camp nights, a Dades Valley night, then onward to Marrakech.Travelers changing cities and wanting a southern route after the dunes.
Six-day Fes to MarrakechTwo Merzouga camp nights, then Todgha Gorge, Ouarzazate and Marrakech nights.Travelers who can spend more nights along the onward route.

These are summaries of existing tour pages. Their exact room or camp category, meals, excursion details and pickup arrangements must be checked on the chosen tour and in the final proposal. Another Fes-to-Marrakech page currently has conflicting source details, so this guide does not recommend that option until those details are resolved.

Allow for the whole travel day

A driving estimate is not a complete schedule. Stops for food, rest, scenery, a planned visit and a camp transfer all add time beyond moving hours. The return to Fes and the continuation toward Dades and Marrakech are different days with different places to cover. Ask what is a brief roadside break and what is a planned visit, especially if a particular stop matters to you.

No specific driving time or arrival hour is promised in this guide. Roadworks, traffic, mountain weather and the chosen route can affect the pace. If you have a flight or train after the tour, share that connection before booking so the operator can assess the itinerary rather than relying on a general estimate.

Decide what to do with time in Merzouga

The three Fes options above each list two camp nights, creating a day based in the Merzouga area between the outward journey and onward travel. Our current records describe desert exploration, but particular experiences are not interchangeable. The three-day round trip lists a sunset camel trek and a 4x4 excursion; the four-day route lists those as well. Optional activities and upgrades are separate from what the quoted itinerary includes.

A camp night also requires decisions about the room, bathroom, transport to camp and meal plan. Ask for the named option in writing. If anyone in your group has limited mobility or prefers not to ride a camel, ask about a suitable transfer before confirming. A Merzouga destination guide describes possible activities in the area; it does not confirm them for every company tour.

Details to send with your inquiry

For a route recommendation, tell us:

  • Your Fes pickup point, preferred travel dates and final city.
  • Whether you need to return to Fes or continue to Marrakech.
  • How many nights you can spare after leaving Fes.
  • Any fixed flight, train or accommodation connection after the tour.
  • Your priorities for desert activities, accommodation and travel pace.

Check the current forecast for both the Middle Atlas and the desert before departure. Conditions in one region do not describe the other. We can use your answers to identify a matching published itinerary, then confirm the operating details in your individual proposal.
