Start with the kind of stay you want
Merzouga is a village beside the Erg Chebbi dunes in southeastern Morocco. It can be a single desert night on a longer road trip or the place where you slow down for an extra day. Decide first whether your priority is seeing the dunes at sunset, having time for a separate desert outing, or simply resting between long road journeys. That choice matters more than a generic list of attractions.
A one-night plan gives you less time on site, especially after arriving by road. A second night can create space for another activity or a quieter day, depending on the itinerary. Our existing tours include both patterns: a three-day Fes round trip has two Merzouga camp nights, while the three-day Marrakech round trip pairs a Dades-area night with one camp night. Check the day-by-day itinerary rather than assuming that a tour's total length equals time in Merzouga.
Plan the journey to and from Merzouga
From Marrakech, our established routes cross the High Atlas and continue through southern destinations such as the Ouarzazate and Dades areas before reaching Merzouga. Our Fes routes travel by way of the Middle Atlas, Midelt and Ziz Valley. The exact stops depend on which tour you choose. A short trip can pass places that a longer itinerary has time to explore; a place on the route is not automatically an included visit.
Decide your next city before selecting a tour. Returning to Fes or Marrakech creates a different travel day from continuing across Morocco to Marrakech. Driving estimates describe time behind the wheel; a real travel day also includes rest, meals, sightseeing, road conditions and the transfer to a camp when relevant. Ask for a realistic daily outline for your dates rather than treating a map estimate as a promised arrival time.
Choose activities without assuming they are included
The Moroccan National Tourist Office describes camel trekking and sandboarding among activities associated with the Merzouga dunes. Walking in the dunes or enjoying the changing light may be enough for some visitors. Others may prefer a guided desert excursion. Availability, suitability and price can vary by operator and by the conditions on the day, so treat an area activity as an option until your own proposal lists it.
If riding a camel is uncomfortable or unsuitable for someone in your group, ask what alternative transfer is possible before confirming the trip. Ask separately whether an excursion, sandboarding, quad biking or a local guide is included, optional or unavailable. The names of activities on a destination page do not establish what Moroccan Desert Tours supplies on your chosen itinerary.
Compare a village stay and a desert camp
A stay in or near the village and a night at a dune camp serve different preferences. For a camp, request the actual property and room category, where it sits in relation to the dune edge, and how you reach it. Check whether the bathroom is private or shared and what the sleeping arrangement will be. Do not rely on labels such as standard or luxury to answer those questions; specific facilities belong in the confirmed proposal.
Also ask which meals are included, how dietary needs are handled, whether charging power is available, and what heating or cooling is provided for your dates. Confirm whether you carry your overnight bag to camp or leave larger luggage with the vehicle. These are useful questions for any camp booking, not statements about the facilities or luggage policy of our tours.
Before you request a Merzouga itinerary
Your Merzouga planning checklist
Send these details with your inquiry so the proposed route fits your plans:
- Your start city, end city, travel dates and number of nights available.
- Whether you want one desert night or more time for a separate activity day.
- Any mobility needs or preferences about camel riding and camp transfers.
- Your preferred room and bathroom arrangement, plus dietary requirements.
- Which activities matter to you and which you would rather skip.
Weather varies by season and from day to day. The tourist office recommends spring and autumn for Sahara travel, but that does not guarantee conditions. Check Morocco's official weather information close to departure and keep your schedule flexible if an advisory affects the route or outdoor activities. We can discuss an itinerary after you share the details above; final inclusions and arrangements should be written into your individual proposal.
