How to Choose a Desert Camp in Merzouga

Ask for the actual camp and room details so you know how the stay, transfer and inclusions will work.

Compare the specific camp, not its label

An overnight by the Erg Chebbi dunes is a reason many travelers include Merzouga in a Morocco journey. The Moroccan National Tourist Office describes desert bivouac stays as one possible experience in the area. That broad description does not tell you what any one camp provides. Names such as standard, luxury or premium are not a substitute for the actual property, room and written inclusions.

Begin with what matters to your group: privacy, ease of access, bathroom setup, dietary needs and comfort in the expected weather. Ask for details of the camp proposed for your dates, as arrangements may differ between itineraries or booking options. A photograph of a camp can show the setting, but it cannot confirm the inside of your reserved room.

Clarify sleeping and bathroom arrangements

Confirm the number and type of beds, whether the accommodation is a private tent or room, and whether the bathroom is private or shared. Ask what bedding and towels are supplied and whether hot water is available in the reserved option. Families and travelers sharing a room may also want the exact occupancy and sleeping layout. None of these details follows reliably from a camp's marketing category.

If stairs, uneven ground or distance from the drop-off point could be difficult, explain the need before reserving. Ask where the camp is located relative to the point where the vehicle stops and how guests reach their rooms. The answer should be about the specific stay, not a general statement that all Merzouga camps work alike.

Ask how the transfer and luggage work

A dune camp may involve a separate transfer after the road journey. Ask whether your booking uses a camel ride, a vehicle transfer or another arrangement, and whether there is a suitable alternative for anyone who does not want to ride. Confirm where the transfer starts and ends, who organizes it, and what happens if weather changes the outdoor plan. These questions matter especially when your travel day to Merzouga has already been long.

Find out whether large luggage stays with the driver, is stored elsewhere or reaches the camp, and what size overnight bag you can bring. These are operator and property arrangements; this guide cannot define Moroccan Desert Tours' policy for every itinerary. Request your chosen option in writing before deciding what to pack.

Check meals, power and temperature comfort

Ask exactly which meals are included at the camp and whether drinks or special diets need separate arrangements. If dietary requirements are important, share them before booking. Confirm whether your reserved room has electricity or charging access, when it is available, and whether any power limitations affect medical or other essential equipment. The answers should be specific to the camp and the dates.

Morocco's climate varies across regions and seasons, and southeastern desert areas have a marked difference between daytime and nighttime conditions. Ask about heating, cooling and bedding for the period you plan to travel. Do not infer that a camp has air-conditioning, heating or constant power because its photographs look comfortable. Check the forecast near departure and discuss any weather concerns with the operator.

Use a short written comparison before confirming

Compare camps in writing

QuestionWhat the confirmation should identify
Which camp and room?Property, room or tent category, occupancy and bed arrangement.
Which bathroom?Private or shared facilities and any essential access details.
How do we arrive?Transfer type, alternative if needed, and luggage handling.
What is included?Meals, activities, drinks and any optional extras separately.
How comfortable will it be?Bedding, charging, heating or cooling for the reserved option.

Compare the answers with the day-by-day tour description and ask about anything that conflicts. A good match is the camp whose confirmed arrangements meet your needs, not necessarily the one with the grandest label. We can discuss available options through the existing inquiry form; this article does not create a separate camp booking or guarantee particular facilities.
